My name is Rebeca Anaya, I’m a Mexican designer currently living in New York with my husband Ben, and my cat Cleo.

¡Mucho gusto!

As you probably noticed, my name is Rebeca Anaya, and I’m a designer born & raised in Torreón (Northern México) currently living in New York with my husband Ben, and my cat Cleo.

My career started 10+ years ago when my partner and I founded Dos.works, a creative studio in northern Mexico dedicated to branding, editorial, & UI.

I started noticing I was a big fan of working with letterforms, so I kept trying to include small lettering pieces in every project I could. It was great, but it wasn’t enough, so in 2017 I took a leap of faith and officially became a freelance lettering artist, and I’m now in the process of becoming a type designer 🎉

I eventually moved to NY to work as Senior Designer for Vault49, where I worked on packaging, lettering and developed product concepts for brands such as Smirnoff, Guinness, Cayman Jack, Camel, and Pentawards.

I studied in Mexico and completed my postgraduate studies in typeface design at The Cooper Union in 2013. I then founded Typebasics, a platform that aims to bring typography knowledge to non-typography designers.

I loved working with:

Art history.

Not thinking about the pandemic.

Traveling.

Knitting & Embroidering.

Embarrassing my husband by admitting I like One Direction.

Dream Project:

I really enjoy reading about historical events and art history, so a dream project for me would be to collaborate with a museum or an art gallery.

After reading "Metropolitan Stories" by Christine Coulson I'd say I'd work for a museum like The Met even if it wasn't as a designer. I'd love to go there on a daily basis and be in touch with all the wonderful objects and paintings housed there and just learn more about their stories.

Recommendations:

"Lettering Manual" by House Industries.

"In Progress" by Jessica Hische.

"Typology. Type design from the victorian era to the digital age" by Steven Heller & Louise Fili.

On a personal level:

Currently Reading:

Mad Enchantment by Ross King.

”Mad Enchantment tells the full story behind the creation of the Water Lilies, as the horrors of World War I came ever closer to Paris and Giverny, and a new generation of younger artists, led by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, were challenging the achievements of Impressionism.”
